All union members are eligible to receive a discounted membership to the Boston Sports Clubs. Members will receive a 40% reduction in both monthly and joining fees.
Committee of Intern and Residents (CIR) Membership Dues (or Agency Fee)
House Officers and fellows are members of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR). Members of CIR pay dues of 1.5% of their net gross salary, deducted weekly. Those house officers who elect to forgo union membership are required (by law) to pay an “agency fee” (also deducted weekly) of 1.45% of their salary.
In certain situations, our residents are compensated for additional work that they are asked to do. For example, if you are required to work for one of your ill colleagues, you may be entitled to as much as $400 (pay scale reflects the number or additional hours worked).
The Hospital provides all interns, residents, and fellows with three (3) white coats in their first year of training, and two (2) for each successive year of their residency or fellowship.
Lease Guarantee Program
The Hospital agrees to act as the Guarantor in the event a House Officer’s landlord requires advance payment of up to two months of rent (security deposit and/or last month’s payment), as a condition for entering into a lease (up to a maximum of $6,500). The Hospital guarantees payment to the landlord under specified terms, and the House Officer agrees to reimburse for any payment the Hospital is required to make under the Guarantee. Those enrolled in this program do not need to provide landlords with more than 1-month rent (i.e. no first/last/security deposit) when signing a lease.
Disability Insurance: The Hospital purchases disability coverage for all house officers. This coverage is portable and is administered by the Committee of Interns and Residents.
Maternity Leave: House officers are entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid family leave for the birth or care of a child, for the adoption of a child under age eighteen or foster care placement of a child under age eighteen. Unused sick and vacation time can be used for this twelve 12 week leave.
Parental Leave: House officers are entitled to two 2 weeks parental leave in order to attend to the birth, adoption, or care of a new child in the employee’s immediate household. Unused sick and vacation time may be used for this leave.
Family & Medical Leave: Eligible persons may be entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid medical leave for serious illness or serious illness of said person’s spouse, parent or child pursuant to the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. All applications for FMLA must comply with the law and the Hospital’s policies and procedures governing such leave.
Limited Licensing Fee
The Hospital pays for the limited license for all House Officers.
All residents and fellows will be provided with a meal allowance of $700 per academic year programmed onto the House Officers’ identification badges. You can use this at any of our cafeterias.
The hospital subsidizes several parking programs for housestaff. There is also a subsidized MBTA (subway/bus) program offered.
Professional Education Allowance
Our housestaff are provided with an allowance to purchase educational materials each year. For the 2017-2018 year, this allowance is $950, $1,000 for 2018-2019, $1,050 for 2019-2020.
Ride Share Program – Lyft
BMC has created a partnership with Lyft, the ride-sharing company. Through the Safe Ride Program, House Officers will be given a one-time use credit to be used towards a ride home with Lyft.
$15 per ride for a House Officer working a 24 hour or more shift
$10 per ride for a House Officer whose shift concludes during late night hours

Vacation: All residents and fellows are given 4 weeks paid vacation each academic year, with the exception of Anesthesia, Dermatology, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Oral Surgery, Otolaryngology (ENT), & Urology (these programs have an option for an additional week of pay in lieu of time off – pending institutional approval).
Personal Days: All residents and fellows have 2 personal days each academic year. Any use of personal days is subject to prior program approval.
Sick Days: All residents and fellows have 15 sick days each academic year.
Bereavement: Eligible persons may be entitled to up to 3 days paid leave for the purposes of attending funeral services or arranging for burial.
