It is with profound sadness and grief that we write to share the news of the loss of a member of our BU Radiology family.
Dr. Marina Bernal Fernandez, third year radiology resident, passed away on June 22nd after an unexpected and brief illness. After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and then medical school at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, we were very fortunate to recruit Marina to join our diagnostic radiology training program. With a smile that lit up a room, a commitment to her patients and her colleagues, and a spirit that drove all those with whom she came in contact to strive to do better, Marina will be missed more than words can express.
Marina’s devotion to others was evident in countless ways – in her ability to sense when her co-residents needed a laugh to relieve the pressures of clinical medicine, in her devotion to her patients, and in her work to provide resources and supplies to those in Puerto Rico who were devastated by Hurricane Maria. A gifted and respected clinician and a rising star in academic radiology, Marina had secured a prestigious IR fellowship, and she was the recipient of multiple invitations to present her research at national meetings.
There are no words to describe the sadness and the loss that we all feel when someone like Marina is taken from our community. We ask that you comfort your colleagues, remember to take care of each other, and keep Marina and her family in your thoughts. She is survived by her husband, her parents, and her brother and sister.
